The Second 'Word Clock' - Sun, Jul 1, 2012

After building one word clock, I had some improvements. Individually addressable LEDs, AM/PM wording, and easier settings.

Background

This is supposed to be an improvement over word clock 1. The main improvements are:

  • Individually addressable LEDs (made using a hand-wired multiplexed matrix of white LEDs)
  • Thinner (since I designed and laser cut the internals of the enclosure)
  • 200% increase in the number of buttons! (3 vs. 1)

How it works

TODO: This needs to be fleshed out. It’s not that complicated, but it needs diagrams.

The letters are cut from vinyl. I designed the layout as well.

The internal wood structure is made to fit in an Ikea frame.

The clock has a menu. You enter it by pushing the buttons on the back.

It can display silly animations, like matrix falling letters, and a bouncing block.

The menu also lets you set the time or show the current date (in scrolling text). If you find it hard to see, blur your eyes a bit.

It can also show you the full date (in scrolling text)
